Root Collar Excavation & Trenching
Healthy trees begin below the surface. Root collar excavation and radial trenching are specialized arboricultural practices used to evaluate and improve the growing environment surrounding a tree’s root system.
A root collar excavation carefully removes excess soil, mulch, and other material from around the base of a tree to expose the natural root flare and inspect important structural roots. Trees that have been planted too deeply, buried by years of added soil or mulch, or affected by construction and landscape changes can develop girdling and adventitious roots, restricted gas exchange, excess moisture around the trunk, and other conditions that may contribute to long-term decline. Using specialized tools such as an air excavation device allows soil to be removed with significantly less disturbance to roots than traditional digging. Once exposed, the root collar can be evaluated for planting depth, girdling or conflicting roots, decay, injuries, and other concerns that may otherwise remain hidden below grade.
Radial trenching takes below-ground tree care a step further by creating narrow trenches extending outward through portions of the root zone, typically using compressed-air excavation to minimize root damage. These trenches can help address heavily compacted or poor-quality soils while creating opportunities to incorporate appropriate soil amendments and organic matter into the root environment. In Central Texas, where trees commonly contend with compacted development soils, shallow limestone, drought, heat, and construction disturbance, improving soil conditions can be an important component of long-term tree management.
